The Mayor of Madrid presents the upcoming edition of the Formula 1 of equestrian sports
10 May 2024From May 17th to 19th, the Longines Global Champions Tour will bring all the spectacle of the ‘Formula 1 of equestrian sports’ to the iconic green arena of the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. The event will blend the glamour of world-class show jumping with an excellent array of leisure, commercial, and gastronomic offerings, making it a must-attend event of Madrid’s spring season.
This morning, at the Madrid City Hall, José Luis Martínez Almeida, Mayor of Madrid; Javier Revuelta, President of the Spanish Equestrian Federation; Álvaro Arrieta, President of Oxer Sport; and Spanish rider Eduardo Álvarez Aznar officially presented this important event that will transform the capital of Spain into the epicenter of the equestrian sports world.
Martínez Almeida expressed his happiness to host this great competition for another year, stating, “Madrid is in vogue, among other things, because we are capable of attracting major international sporting events. However, we want to show gratitude to those who trusted us years ago, like the LGCT and Oxer, allowing us to be one of the 16 cities in the world to enjoy this competition.”
Therefore, with the event firmly established, Madrid has decided to sign a five-year extension with the organization, ensuring that the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid remains one of the best venues in the circuit for the immediate future, allowing Madrid’s residents to continue enjoying top-tier sporting events at home.
For Almeida, this 113 CSI 5* Madrid “is an extraordinary opportunity for all Madrilenians to enjoy the best riders in the world, including Eduardo Álvarez Aznar, who is one of our own.”
The most prominent Spanish representative in the international equestrian scene, Eduardo Álvarez Aznar, arrives at this edition, after the first four LGCT events, in first place in the standings. “Madrid is one of my main goals of the year. I feel accomplished as a rider in that arena, and it is one of the most special moments of the season. Additionally, arriving as the leader, this year I will need to give a little more,” explains the Olympic athlete.
Javier Revuelta, President of the RFHE, added, “From a sporting perspective, the celebration of this 113 CSI 5* Madrid is one of the year's major events, as it is the most prestigious international circuit bringing us the best riders in the world. Additionally, for Spanish equestrianism, it is also significant, not only because the best-ranked Spaniards in the international rankings are coming, but also because it will be a critical test for the upcoming Olympics, as the green arena will determine who is in the best form.”
Álvaro Arrieta, President of Oxer Sport, also expressed his pleasure at returning to the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, “one of the best venues in the circuit.” He added, “No other city in Europe has the level of equestrian events that Madrid has. This city is at the forefront of this sport. It’s a magical arena, and in addition to the quality of its facilities, it boasts a rich history, something money can’t buy,” Arrieta celebrated.
